EVANSVILLE

a city of Indiana, in Vandervurg co., of which it is the county seat. It is on the Evansville and Terra Louis, the Louisville, Nashville, and other railroads, and on the Ohio River, 185 miles west. of Louisville, The city is located on a high bank at a curve in the river, halfway between the falls and the junction of the Mi i ippi. It is an important trade center of a rich agricultural and coal mining region and has excellent facilities for shipping. It is connected with the Mi i ippi and Ohio river points by many steamship lines. Its industries include iron and bra foundries, harne and saddlery works, steam engine works, boiler works, furniture factories, boot and shoe factories, and plants for the making of pottery, metal goods, and chemicals. It is the seat of the Evansville Insane Asylum, the St. Mary’s, and United State Marine hospitals, county infirmary, and Evans Hall. It has United States government buildings, public day school for the deaf, busine college, public library, a high school, bank and daily and weekly newspapers. Pop. 1920, 85,264.
