Nanking

City of China, on the s. bank of the Yangtse Kiang, 100 m. from its mouth; founded 1368; held 1853-64 by the Tai-ping rebels, who destroyed many of its edifices. It is the chief seat of learning of China, and has silk, paper and cotton manufactures. Pop. ab. 200,000.
