Covering-board

Any board, plank or a strake of planking placed horizontally to cover certain parts or openings in a ve el. In wooden ve els for instance the range of plank fitted upon a waterway to cover the timber-heads; or the boards fitted between the bulwark-stanchions, having on their outside the plank sheer and inside the waterway as their boundary for covering the heads of the frames. See Plates 12. 47 & 13. 34. The term is also applied to thin wooden waterways on poops, forecastles; bridge-houses, etc., see Plate 29 A.a. Moreover to boards placed horizontally upon the hold-ceiling of iron.
