a native State in the new United Provinces of India, on the borders of Tibet; area, 4,164 square miles; ‘pop. 241,242. Also the name of a British district in the Northwest Provinces, next to independent Garhwal; area, 5,500 square miles; pop. 407,818. The native State is the cradle of both the Jumna and the Ganges.
