Messenger

A rope or chain employed for heaving a chain-cable inboard. On board of war-ships it consists of <a long stout rope, the ends of which are connected, forming an immense strop; by means of which and, a capstan, a chain-cable is hove inboard. In ve els having steam-winches the me enger consists of a chain having its ends connected, its extension is then pa ed over a chain-wheel on the windla , also over a chain-wheel on the steam-winch, the latter causing the windla to revolve, by which means the chain-cable is hove inboard.
