MESSENGER

In Naval Language, a hawser or small cable of about sixty fathoms in length, wound round the capstan, and having its two ends lashed together. When the anchor is to be weighed this rope is attached to the cable by the nippers, and thus acts as an endle rope. Chain me engers are sometimes employed. MESSENGERS, [s. 746]
