ADAMS, JOHN

(1735-1826), second president of the United States, was b. at Educated at Harvard (1755), he was called to the bar in 1758. He was one of the Ma . representatives to the Congre in 1774, and a promoter of the Declaration of Independence, 1776. He became ambas. to Holland, 1782; to Great Britain, 1785; president of the United States, 1797-1801. He pub. a Defense of the Constitution of the U. S. fn 1787. See also Unitep STrartus— History.
