NITROGLYCERIN

n. Nit-ro-gli2s'e2r-isn. Lat., nitroglycerinum (from virpov, nitre, and yAvicvs. sweet), nitroleum. Fr., nitroglycerine. Ger., N. Syn.: trinitrin. tilonoin. A colorle , oily, explosive liquid. C3HB(ONO2)?, prepared by the action of nitric and sulphuric acids on glycerin and subsequent precipitation with water. It is insoluble i'n water and in glycerin, sparingly soluble in alcohol, readily soluble in ether, in chloroform, in glacial acetic acid, and in carbolic acid.
