Areopag. 4. 413. Milton uses the word to mean the northern part of the continent of North America (cf. “Dominion of Canada” as used to-day). In his time, however, the name seems to have been restricted to the country along the St. Lawrence River (Blaeu, p. 26), a usage which long persisted in the application of the name only to the provinces of Quebec and Montreal.
