QUARANTINE

n. Kwa4r-a2n^en'. From Fr., quarante, forty. Fr.. quaranlaine. Ger., Quarant/tne. 1. Originally, isolation of a ship from the port it was making for for a period of forty days, during which time means were taken to prevent communication of disease from the ship, crew, or cargo. The time during which this isolation is continued is now left to the discretion of the proper authorities. 2. The place at which ve els are stopped, and properly attended to, to prevent the spread of contagious disease. 3. The isolation of a person or district on land, to prevent the spread of contagion.
