(sah-ra-gos's ah,) [Sp. ZARAGOZA,] a city of Spain, C. of a p. of same name, and whilom metropolis of the kingdom of Aragon, on the Ebro, 176 m. N.E. of Madrid. Its university dates from 1478, and it is remarkable in history for the resolute defence made against the French, who besieged it for seven months, 1808-9. Pop. 56,310. [s. 797]
