U.S.A., 1814-1879. Commander of the First Corps at S. Mountain and Antietam 1862, of the Army of the Potomac Jan.-June, 1863; defeated at Chancellorsville May 2-3; in command of 20th Corps in Tenn. and Ga. 1863–64; retired as Major-gen. 1868.
