Hooker, Joseph

(1814-1879), born in Ma achusetts, was graduated from West Point in 1837. He was brevetted lieutenant-colonel for hia very gallant service during the Mexican War from 1846 to 1848. He was appointed a brigadier-general of the National forces in 1861, and commanded a division in 1862 in the Army of the Potomac, He waa brevetted major-general for services at York town, Williams burg and Malvern Hill. He had important commands at South Mountain, Antietam and Fred ericks burg. In 1863 he succeeded Burnside in command of the Army of the Potomac, and conducted the battle of Chancellorsville, but, being unsucce ful, was soon after succeeded by General Meade. He was a igned command in the Army of the Cumber land, and fonght at Lookout Mountain and Mi ionary Ridge. He accompanied Sherman in his march through Georgia until after the siege of Atlanta. He was brevetted major-general in the regular army in 1865, and retired in 1868.
