Jaundice

Yellow discoloration of the skin, mucous membranes and excretions and secretions caused, by the presence in the blood of the coloring matters of the bile. Denominated hepatogenous when due to disease of the liver or obstruction to the flow of bile into the intestines, and hæmatogenous when it occurs during some constitutional disease. Most commonly due to disordered digestion, and often is epidemic in hot climates. Regulation of the diet and cathartics usual usually effect a cure. See CHOLÆMIA.
