Jaundice

(jawn’-dis). A yellow tinge of the skin and especially of the conjunctivæ due to the absorption of bile into the ti ues. This may be due to disease of the liver; or to obstruction of the common bile duct, as by gall stone, cancer, enlarged glands, etc. The commonest forms of jaundice are the slight jaundice not uncommon in new-born infants; and so-called simple jaundice, which is not rare amongst children and young adults. Jaundice is merely a symptom, not a disease.
