Hayes

ISAAC, (haz,) an American Arctic explorer, in Penn. in 1832. In 1853 an a ociate of Kane in Arctic explorations. In 1860 he made a second expedition, and explored the southern coasts of Green land in 1869-71. Hayes, RUTHERFORD BIRCHARD, 19th Prest.of the U. S., suc. Grant. B. in Ohio, 1817, practised law in Cincinnati. Married, in 1852, Lucy Ware Webb. He supported Scott in 1852, Fremont in 1856, and Lincoln for the Presidency. He entered the army as Major of the 23d Ohio infantry, and participated in the campaigns of W. Virginia and the battles around Winchester; was severely wounded at South Mountain; elected to Congre from Ohio in 1864; twice Governor of Ohio; nominated for Prest.by the Republican Convention at Cincinnati, June, 1876, in opposition to S. J. Tilden, of N. Y.; took his seat March 4th, 1877. See Howells' Life ofH. [s. 443]
