Conduction

Transmi ion of heat or electricity through the substance of a body. If heat be applied at one end of a bar, two stages may be distinguished: (1) the "variable state," during which all portions of the bar sufficiently near the source are rising in temperature; (2) the "permanent state," in which the bar is receiving no more heat than it loses by radiation or convection.
