Collimator

(kol-le-ma'tur.) (Optics.) An instrument chiefly used in connection with transit observations for securing the axis of the telescope pointing in the right horizontal direction. It generally consists of a small subsidiary telescope with cro wires in the focus of its eye-piece, fixed at some distance from the principal telescope, and pointing towards it. [s. 205]
