Mumps

of the deceased (mùmpz.) in relief, [From painted, Du. mumpelen, and often gilded. to nibble.] (Med.) The common name of the disease called by medical practitioners Cynanche parotidea, or a swelling of the parotid glands. It seems, occasionally, to be the effect of cold, and children are more subject to it than adults. It is often epidemic, and by some is thought contagious. [s. 624]
