n. Mu3mps. Lat., parotiditis, parotitis. Fr., oreillon. Ger.,M., Ziegenpeter, Ohrendriisengeschwulst. An infectious and contagious disease characterized by inflammation of the parotid gland, initiated by fever and by pain just below the ear. The swelling of the gland usually decreases in from seven to ten days, and occasionally there is metastasis to the testicle, the ovary, or the mamma, with atrophy of the affected organ sometimes following, [a, 34.] M. of the lacrymal glands.
