Gun Lift

Apparatus devised by Col. T. T. S. Laidley, U.S.A. (1822-1886), to mount the 15-inch smooth-bore and other heavy guns upon their carriages with the a istance of a small detachment of men: it consists of a hydraulic jack and suitable framework. More recently, the hydraulic elevator operated by steam power to raise the heaviest modern high-powered guns from their screened position behind the parapet to their firing position en barbette. At Fort Hancock, Sandy Hook, N. Y., two of these are now constructed.
