Lift

—1. To move in a direction opposite to the law of gravitation; to raise; to elevate. 2. The space or distance through which anything is lifted. 3. A hoisting machine; an elevator. 4. In mechanics, one of the steps of a cone pulley. 5. In mining, a single set of pumps in the shaft; each combination of pumps and cistern, of which a series are used to raise the water to the surface. 6. In pumping, that portion of the total head represented by the difference in elevation of the water to be pumped and the inlet valves of the pump.
