GHAUTS

A term applied originally to the narrow nnd difficult pa es in the mountains of Central Hindostan, but which has been gradually extended to the mountains themselves. They consist of two great chains extending along the east and west coasts of the Deccan, parallel to each other, or rather diverging, and leaving between them nnd the sea only a plain of 40 or 50 miles in breadth. The precise altitude of these mountains has not been ascertained, but their general elevation is from 3000 to 4000 feet; and while the extent of the Eastern Ghauts has been limited to a line of 300 miles, the chain of Western Ghauts is said to extond of without Orography.)interruption nearly 1000 miles.
