(gawts,) (The.) [Hind., mountains.) The name of 2 mountain-ranges in India, known as the E. and W. Ghauts, respectively, traversing the lower portion of the peninsula from N. to S. The W. division interpose a high and almost inacce ible barrier between Mysore and the central pro vs., and the pres. of Bombay, attaining a maximum height of 7,000 ft. [s. 406]
