GHAUTS

A term applied originally to the narrow and difficnlt pa es in the mountains of Central Hindostan, but which has been gradually extended to the mountains themselves. They consist of two great chains extending along the east and west coasts of the Deccan, parallel to each other, or rather diverging, and leaving between them and thtf sea only a plain of 40 or 60 mlleg in breadth.
