A dark-brown viscid liquid, obtained by heating the wood of the fir tree: it consists of resin, empyreumatic oil, and acetic acid. When inspi ated by boiling, it is converted into pitch. The varieties of tar have lately been the subject of an elaborate investigation by Dr. 4H 4 [s. 1220]
