Before the days of vaccination small pox was frequently inoculated in order to induce a mild attack of this disease, and thus provide immunity for the rest of the patient's life. The practice has been prohibited by law because it frequently gave rise to serious epidemics of small pox in the neighbourhood. [s. 377]
