Hull, WILLIAM

1753-1825. Officer in the American Revolution. Gov. of Mich. 1805-12. As commander of the army of the northwest he surrendered Detroit and his troops to the British, Aug. 16, 1812. For this he was court-marshaled and sentenced to death, but was reprieved. History has reversed the verdict, finding him the victim of circumstances and a scapegoat for others' faults.--His nephew, ISAAC, 1773-1843, commanding the U. S. frigate Constitution, took the Guerrière, Aug. 19, 1812.
