Donkey-pump

— Donkey. Is a pump worked by steam supplied either from a main-, or a donkey-boiler; and is sometimes also workable by hand power. At sea it serves as an auxiliary-pump, i. e: it replaces the services of a Bilge-pnmp", u Feed-pump ”, etc. in case of any accident to the latter. When a ve el is in port it is employed to supply feedwater to a main-, or a donkey-boiler, when any of these receptacles are under steam for the purpose of working winches etc.; it is also used for pumping out bilge-water, emptying water-ballast-tanks, supplying water for cleaning the decks, and other purposes.
