In Heraldry, one of the nine honourable ordinaries. It may be defined as consisting of the lower half of a saltire(see SALTiRE), brought to a point on the upper side; and the object from which its name is derived accurately resembles it in shape; chevron, in old French, meaning the support of a roof formed by two rafters leaning against one another. A chevron standing on one side of the escutcheon is said to be tourny, dexter, or sinister. [s. 238]
