TORTUGAS

or DRY TORTUGAS, a group of islands, over ten in number, about 40 miles west of the Florida Keys. Fort Jefferson, on one of the islands, was a penal station during the Civil War. The islands were once favorite resorts of pirates and buccaneers. They are of little value.
