(mel-an-ko’le-ah) (Gr. μέλας black + χολή bile]. A form of insanity marked by a dere ed and painful emotional state with abnormal inhibition of mental and bodily activity. acute m., an acute form of melancholia marked, in addition to the usual symptoms, by lo of appetite, emaciation, insomnia, and subnormal temperature. agitatedm.,m. agita’ta, melancholia with constant motion and signs of great emotional excitement. m. atton’ita, a form in which the patient lies motionle and silent. m. with delirium, a form in which there are distre ing delusions and hallucinations. flatuous m., that which is characterized by gases in the alimentary canal. m. hyhondri’aca, extreme hypochondriasis. involution m., melancholia developing in advanced life during senile involution. recurrent m. + a condition in which attacks of melancholia follow one another at more or le regular intervals. m. religio’sa, the delusion of one’s own personal damnation. m. sim’plex, a mild form with neither delusions nor great excitement. stuporous m., melancholia attonita: a form in which the patient lies motionle and _ silent, with fixed eyes and indifference to surrroundings; there are sometimes hallucinations. melancholiac (mel-an-ko’le-ak). Affected with melancholia; also a person affected with melancholia. mel an edema (mel-an-e-de’mah) [Gr. μέλας black + οἴδημα swelling]. See anthracosis. moelanemia (mel-an-e’me-ah) (Gr. μέλας black + alu a blood]. The presence of black, pigmentary ma es in the blood; hem a chroma to sis. The condition is seen chiefly in pernicious anemia. moelanephidrosis (mel’’an-ef-id-ro‘sis) (Gr. μέλας black + ἐφίδρωσις exce ive sweating]. The discharge of black sweat. mélangeur (ma-lan-zher’)). An instrument for drawing and diluting specimens of blood for examination. It consists of a capillary tube, one end of which is blown into a bulb having a capacity of 100 c.mm. mel anidrosis (mel’an-id-ro’sis) [Gr. μέλας black + ἱδρώς sweat]. Black sweat. me laniferous (mel-an-ifer-us) (melanin + L. fer’re to bear]. Containing melanin or other black pigment. melanin (mel’an-in) [Gr. μέλας black]. A dark pigment from the choroid, hair, and other dark ti ues, and from melanotic tumors. It is a product of cell activity, contains sulphur and iron, and is probably a derivative of hematin. artificial m., factitious m., a compound resembling melanin, formed when a protein is heated in strong hydrochloric acid. Called also melanoid. melanism (mel’an-izm) [Gr. μέλας black]. Exce ive pigmentation or blackening of the integuments or ti ues; melanosis. melanistic (mel-an-is’tik). anism. melano- (Gr. μέλας black). black. melanoblast (mel’an-o-blast) (Gr. μέλας black + Characterized by mel- A prefix signifying βλαστός germ]. An epithelial cell which generates pigment. melano blastoma = (mel’’an-o-blas-to’mah). A tumor made up of melanoblasts. melano cancroid (mel’’an-o-kang’kroid). A ‘strongly pigmented epithelial tumor.
