Gossypium

Cotton. The hairs of the seed of G. herbaceum. Freed from impurities and deprived of fatty matter, it becomes the absorbent cotton of surgery. It is soluble in an ammoniacal solution of copper sulphate. The root is thought to have emmenagogue properties. G. purificatum, purified cotton. G. rad., Cortex, cotton-root bark. Dose gr. G. rad., Ext., Fid., prepared with glycerin and alcohol. Dose G. seminis, Ol., the expre ed oil constitutes most of the so-called olive-oil of commerce. G., Tinct., 1 in 4. Dose See, also, Pyroxylin. Gowland's Cosmetic, Lotion, or Wash. A famous lotion used in the treatment of acne, and said to have contained oxy muriate of mercury in an emulsion of bitter almonds. Gr. Abbreviation of grain.
