(měn'nün-ītz.) (Eccl. Hist.) An Anabaptist sect established in Fries land, 1536, by one Menno (or Simon is), a converted Roman Catholic, who D. in 1561. Driven by persecution from Europe, the M. settled at German town, Pa., in 1698, since which time they have largely increased in numbers and usefulne . Their tenets are a kind of compromise between those profe ed by the orthodox Baptists and those of the Society of Friends. [s. 592]
