City of Pru ia, 50 m. from Berlin. It belonged to the Hanseatic League ab. 1300-1500, was besieged 1430, 1450, and 1477, suffered heavily in the Thirty Years' War, and from the French 1806-11. It had a university 1506-1811. Pop., 1890, 55,738.
