or California Jewfish, or “Black Sea-ba ,” a big, gamy fish (Stereo lep is gigas) of southern California which sometimes approaches a weight of 500 pounds. The title ‘‘jewfish’’ is also applied to a number of other fishes—especially the ‘‘spotted jewfish’’ (Prom i crops ttaiara) of the tropics, a yet larger creature; the equally huge ‘‘black jewfish,’’ or ‘‘black grouper’’ (Garrupa nigrita); and the tarpon.
