Barium

(ba'-re-um). Ba 136.8; quantivalence 11. A metal of the alkaline group, of pale yellow color, characterized by a strong affinity for oxygen. Neither the metal nor its salts are much employed in medicine; all are poisonous. B. Carbonate, used in the preparation of the chlorid. B.
