(ba’re-um) [Gr. Bapos weight]. A pale yellowish. metallic element belonging to the alkaline earths, whose salts are poisonous. Its atomic weight is 136.8; its symbol, Ba. b. arsenate, a salt, Ba,(AsO,);: used in phthisis and in skin diseases. Dose. ~:—} gr. (0.004-0.016 gm.). Ὦ. bromid, a compound, BaBr,+2H,0: used as a heart tonic and in aneurysm and scrofula. Ὦ. carbonate, a poisonous salt, BaCO,: formerly used in medicine: now employed in preparing the chlorid. etc. b. chl hlorid, a compound, BaCh- +2H,0: a cardiac stimulant; has been used in sclerosis of the nervous ti ues and in aneurysm. Dose. $5 gr. (0.033-0.324 gm.). b. dioxid (L. ba’ rit dioxi dum a Ay BaO,: used in pharmacy. b. drate, droxid, caustic baryta, Ba(OH),,a fe eatline salt employed asa test for sulphates. b. iodid, used like pota ium iodid. Dose, 4 gr. (0.008 gm.). b. loretinate, a neutral compound of barium and loretin, Ba(1.0H.C,H,N.- SO,), + 24H,0; in lustrous, orange-hued needles, soluble in water.
