Ballast

Stone, iron, sand, water or other heavy material placed in the lowest part ol a ve el or boat to give stability. Ballast is employed to keep an empty crank ve el upright in a harbour; also to ensure the steadine of a ve el, when sailing without cargo over sea; or to be put under light cargoes such as cotton, wool, deals etc.
