CLARINET

(It. clarino.) A wooden musical wind instrument, whose mouth partakes of the trumpet form, and is played by holes and keys: said to have been invented about the year 1600 by John Christopher Denner of Leipsic. Like the oboe it is played with a reed mouthpiece, though it is of somewhat different form. [s. 250]
