(es'tür,) or HADASSAH, a Jewe whose name has been given to one of the canonical books of the Bible containing her history. She was the adopted daughter of Mordecai, and married Ahasuerus, king of Persia (Artaxerxes Long i man us),in the 5th century B. C. Some admit the canonicity of Esther only so far as the third verse of the tenth chapter. [s. 342]
