XANTHIN

A substance, G5H4N4O2. occurring in minute quantities in the urine (especially after the use of sulphur baths), in the serum of the blood, in muscular ti ue, in the liver, spleen, thymus gland, pancreas, and brain, and pathologically as a constituent of xanthic calculi. It occurs as a white or pale-yellow amorphous powder, or, if deposited from a slowly evaporating solution, as small scales. It acts as a base, forming crystalline compounds with acids and alkalies.
