A. (1804-1875), represented North Carolina in the U. S. Senate from 1840 to 1843, was Governor of the State from 1845 to 1849, Secretary of the Navy in Fill more’s Cabinet from 1850 to 1853, and Whig candidate for Vice-President in 1852.
