The totality of the thick outside-planking of a ve el, fitted about midway between the plank sheer and the light water-line; the breadth of the wales is generally equal to '/4th or ‘/s* of the ve el’s depth, and the thickne from 3 to 9 inches, according to the size of the ve el.
