(al's u ,) a prov. of Pru ia, bordering on the Rhine. Area, 3,040 sq. m.; C. Strasburg; pop. about 1,117,000. It belonged to France till the 10th cent.; was taken by the Emperor Otho I., 955; ceded to France in 1697, and seized by Pru ia, 1870. See LORRAINE. [s. 23]
