(str a-biz’mus) [Gr. orpaftouds]. A squint; deviation of one of the eyes from its proper direction, so that the visual axes cannot both be directed simultaneously at the same objective point. absolute s., that which occurs at all distances for the fixation-point. accommodative s., that which is due to exce ive or deficient accommodative effort. alternat 8., a form affecting either eye alternately. Dbilateral s., that which affects each eye alternately. Braid’s 8., the turning of the eyes simultaneously upward and inward; a means sometimes adopted of inducing the hypnotic state. Concomitant s., that which is due to a faulty insertion of the eye muscles, resulting in the same amount of deviation in whatever direction the cyes are looking, because the squinting eye follows the movements of the other eye. constant s., per six tent strabismus. convergent 8., cro -eye or esotropia. 8. deor’sum ver’gens, that in which the visual axis of the squinting eve falls below the fixation-point. Called ad divergent s., that in which the visual axes diverge; exotropia. © 8., the tendency to strabismus due to insufficiency of the ocular muscles, but which may be overcome by the effort of binocular vision. Called also Jatent s. e@xternal s., divergent strabismus. intermittent 8., that which occurs only at intervals. internal 8., esotropia. latent s., that which occurs only when one eye is occluded. manifest s., that which occurs when both eyes are open. mechanic 8., that due to pre ure or traction on the eye, as by a tumor, producing deflection. mono lateral 8., that in which it is always the same eve the visua! axis of which fails to pa through the fixation-point. mon-concomitant s., that in which the amount of deviation of the squinting eye varies according to the direction in which the eyes are turned. paralytic s., that which is due to paralysis of aneye muscle. paralytics., acute, strabismus attended by dizzine and double vision. periodic s., that which is seen only during efforts at accommodation. relative s8., that which occurs for some and not for other distances of the fixation-point. spasmodic s., that which is due to spasm of the muscles of the eye. suppre ed s., hetero pho ria. 8. sur’sum ver’- gens, that in which the visual axis of the squinting eye falls below the fixation-point. unilateral s., that which affects one eye only. unilocular s., strabismus affecting only one eye. vertical s., hyper trop i a; the elevation of one visual axis above the other. strabometer (str a-bom’et-er).
