Venomous serpent of s. Europe and Egypt. The former is the common viper; the other, connected with the story of Cleopatra's suicide, was probably the horned viper. Naja Haje, Egyptian Asp. The neck dilates like that of the Cobra, but not in so marked a degree. It is one of the national symbols of Egypt, indicating royal power.
