(sa'tăn.) (Script.) A Hebrew term, meaning enemy or adversary, and used in several instances in this sense in the Old Testament. Generally, however, it is applied to the Devil, the mighty spirit of evil, in rebellion against God, and antagonistic to man. [s. 798]
