Mackintosh

Sir James, the Scottish historian and philosopher, was born in 1765. He won his fame by his lectures on "The Law of Nature and Nations,” and by defending Peltier, who was prosecuted for libel on Napoleon Bonaparte. He was Recorder of Bombay, then entered Parliament for Nairn, became Profe or Maitland, of Law at Haileybury College, and, in 1830, Commi ioner of Indian affairs. He wrote *' History of England,” "Di ertation on the Progre of Ethical Philosophy,” etc.
