Irving, WASHINGTON

LL.D., 1783-1859. First highly succe ful American author; resident in Europe 1815-32; Minister to Spain 1842-46. With J. K. Paulding he wrote Salmagundi, 1807, and with his brother PETER (1771-1838) a burlesque History of New York, by D. Knickerbocker, 1809. His first great succe was The Sketch - Book, 1818, including Rip Van Winkle and Sleepy Hollow. Then came Brace bridge Hall, 1822; Tales of a Traveler, 1824; Life of Columbus, 1828; Conquest of Gra nada. 1829; Companions of Columbus, 1831; The Alhambra, 1832. At home he wrote Tour on the Prairies and Abbottsford, 1835; Astoria, 1836: Captain Bonneville, 1837. His latest works were a Life of Goldsmith, 1846-49; Mahomet and his Succe ors, 1850; Wolfert's Roost, 1855; and Life of Washington, 5 vols., 1855-59. His later years were pa ed at Sunny side, near Tarry town, N. Y.-His brother WILLIAM (1766-1821) wrote parts of Salmagundi, and was M. С. 1813–18.
